Book Arts Fundamentals
I will be teaching a one-day workshop on the fundamentals of creating artists’ books. The one-day workshop will be held on November 5 or November 15 (your choice) in Tucson. Email me at cjshane@earthlink.net and I’ll send you a pdf brochure and registration materials. The cost of the workshop is $75. This includes all materials - art paper, book board, adhesives, etc.
Morning: We’ll We’ll learn proper use of tools and the basic skills (measuring, cutting, scoring, folding), and we’ll learn about making our own bookmaker’s pastes. We’ll examine and discuss which type of art paper to choose for a particular project. We’ll make a simple accordion fold book, and we’ll l earn how to cover it by properly cutting and pasting paper on to book board and then adhering the cover to the accordion book.
Afternoon: We’ll learn the fundamental structures used in books arts by expanding what we learned in the morning session. We’ll make some fold book variations (eg: To/Fro Origami book, carousel/star) book). We’ll learn basic pamphlet stitching and combine that with stitching to create variations (dos-a-dos, French doors, etc.). We’ll make simple slip covers for fold and pamphlet-stitched books.
