Favorite PBS Passport shows: Part 1

Here’s my first blog post all about great shows on PBS Passport. Keep in mind that if you become a member of PBS Passport, you can access a lot of shows, fiction and nonfiction, especially great documentaries, including science, nature, cooking, travel, etc.

Also you can watch all the past seasons as well as the current season. And in case you miss a favorite, for example, Antiques Roadshow, you can still see it on Passport. Here in southern Arizona, that means AZPM, https://www.azpm.org/ The cost to join Passport starts as low as $5/month. My hope is that you’ll join, enjoy these great shows, and your membership will help support PBS.

Okay. I’ll admit it. I’m a fan of mysteries so you’ll see a lot of recommendations in that genre. But there’s lots more on Passport.

I’m starting this month with Miss Scarlet (formerly titled Miss Scarlet and the Duke), which is a British Masterpiece Theater series.

Setting: Victoria-era London. Character: Miss Scarlet is the daughter of a deceased detective who becomes a detective herself. Plot: mysteries, not too violent, with a side-emphasis on all the interesting characters in her world. And a hint of romance, too. There are five seasons and season six will appear in 2026.

PBS Passport also offers us “Walter Presents” which is a collection of European tv series. There’s a lot of great shows in the Walter Presents collection. Mostly they are in European languages with English subtitles. Here’s one of my recent favorites.

Cold Summer: Italian. 8 part Italian series set in Bari, Italy, in the 1990s. The main character is police sergeant Pietro Fenoglio. He and his team fight against the threatened invasion of criminal mafiosi into his territory. He’s an interesting character, an intellectual who likes to listen to classical music and go to art museums in his free time.

Weathered: Excellent documentary nonfiction series, typically only 12-13 minutes long, on major environmental events and conditions of our time. The longest was 55 minutes and about the recent Los Angeles fires. “Inside the LA Firestorms.” Very timely and relevant.
